The Ching Dynasty has placed secret agents and informants amongt those who resist The Ching Rulership, they will slaughter any real or perceived threat to their rule. After The Ching kill his family, young “Iron” hides out at The Shaolin Temple-first as a food stealing refugee; and then as a student. Eventually he excels in his studies enough to return home and seek out revenge. Prior to all of this, he was just an irresponsible kid drinking and gambling every day; but reality has struck hard and swiftly. Now Iron must learn how to rise above the outside world and rose to higher levels of consciousness. In the process, “Iron” will have to overcome his own demons-plus face off with jealous monks, Fung Kong, Captain Pa, Captain Ti, and General in the process. To do so, he must also master the difficult to learn-but highly effective Monkey Fist Style of Kung Fu from The Bitter Monk. There are a lot of jewels here; and the action is magnificent!! Wu-Tang Lovers will peep some ill samples used in the intro to The Wu Tang Clan’s third album “The W” on “Chamber Music.” Among other luminaries of the Shaolin Kung Fu Genre, “Iron Monkey” stars Chen Kuan-Tai, Ka Yan (Bryan) Leung, and Kuan Jiun Chi. Referred to as The "Emperor of Chinese Cinema," by TIME Magazine, Run Run Shaw helped bring a lion's share of the Old School Shaolin Kung Fu flicks that many of us cherish into our hearts & minds. And at the age of 106, he passed away earlier this week. With his brother, the all too familiar SHAW BROTHERS brand was stamped on 800 titles (some say more than 1000) including:
Run Run Shaw lived his later years as a philanthropist, and married to celebrated Movie Producer Mona Fong (he had previously been married for 50 Years to actress Wong Mei Chun). In 1964, astronomers named an asteroid belt-located between Mars & Jupiter-after Shaw. What better way to honor a LEGEND... SHAOLIN CHALLENGES NINJA -aka- HEROES OF THE EASTAlso known as "Shaolin VS Ninja," the 1978 Shaw Brothers Flick "Shaolin Challenges Ninja" aka "Heroes of the East" tells an aspect of the rarely told clash of cultures story that raged on for centuries between China and Japan. As the story goes, marital bliss between a Chinese Martial Arts Expert and a beautiful Japanese lady-with her own revered family style-encounter difficulties when he makes the mistake of offending her & her family. As a result, Ah To finds himself having to defend himself, his dignity & his marriage against seven Japanese Martial Arts Masters. The film stars, one of my personal favorites, Chia Hui Liu aka Gordon Liu, Lung Cham Kang-Yeh Cheng & Norman Chu. The revered Liu Chia Liang is the director. Great Story, Great Action. Enjoy. "SHAOLIN VS LAMA"One of the finer flicks of the 70's-80's Shaolin Kung Fu flick era, SHAOLIN VS LAMA blends intense action, humor, and underlying themes addressing the cultural/ethnic conflict between Chinese & Tibetan societies at the same time. The story follows young Sung Yu Ting, in his sometimes comedic attempts to persuade an cantankerous GrandMaster (Yah Lan) to take him on as his pupil. Initially rejected, due to the betrayal suffered a decade earlier from a renegade student, Ting eventually becomes Shaolin's only hope against what has been discovered to have been a Tibetan Lama who only entered Shaolin for the purpose of avenging his original master's death. The movie is full of colorful characters, comedic moments, drama & action. Wu-Tang lovers will find several popular vocal bits, used on BOTH of the Only Built For Cuban Linx Albums & other classics from the early RZA production days. Enjoy. "The Mystery Of Chessboxing" 1979 For any fan of Old School Shaolin Kung Fu flicks, The Mystery Of Chess Boxing aka Ninja Checkmate would be considered among the Top Tier Greats. Originally released in 1979, it is a classic story of revenge; but with a slightly more complicated spin on it. As most kung fu flicks simply center around the efforts of the story's hero seeking to avenge the evil committed by a villainous figure, The Mystery of Chessboxing also weaves in a tale of the Villain's quest to avenge what he deems to have a legitimate wrong committed against himself. The film is directed by Joseph Kuo, has been used for a number of RZA samples on various early Wu Tang Clan projects, inspired the name of the same-titled track on 1993's "Enter The Wu-Tang 36 Chambers, and is the influence behind the Emcee Moniker Ghostface Killah. Whether a lover of the genre, or not, watching the Ghost Face Killer use his legendary Five Elements style to get revenge against the Kung Fu Masters that left him for dead & young Ah Pao mission to avenge the murder of his father, make for a great way to spend your Sunday leisure time (or any day for that matter). Comments & Feedback Encouraged & Appreciated. Enjoy. |
